Chandigarh, March 30, 2025 (Bharat Khabarnama Bureau) The Punjab government has appointed senior advocate Anu Chatrath as the new Senior Additional Advocate General, following the recent appointment of Maninderjit Singh Bedi as the state’s Advocate General. The decision comes as part of a major reshuffle in the state’s legal team, with the government having earlier asked all law officers in the Advocate General’s office to resign to make way for a new team.

Anu Chatrath, an experienced advocate practicing at the Punjab and Haryana High Court, brings considerable expertise to her new role. A resident of Chandigarh, Chatrath has built a strong reputation in constitutional and service matters over her two-decade-long career. She has previously served as panel lawyer for various government departments and has extensive experience in handling complex litigation cases.

The appointment marks a significant change in the state’s legal leadership under the Bhagwant Mann-led administration. Government sources indicate the move is aimed at strengthening Punjab’s legal team ahead of several important cases, including the upcoming SYL canal dispute in the Supreme Court.

Chatrath’s elevation to the key post is seen as part of the government’s efforts to bring fresh perspective to its legal strategy. Known for her meticulous preparation and sharp legal acumen, she is expected to play a crucial role in advising the state government on constitutional matters and representing Punjab in high-stakes litigation.

The reshuffle comes at a critical juncture as the state prepares to face several legal challenges in the coming months. With both the new Advocate General and Senior Additional Advocate General now in place, the Punjab government’s legal team is set for a new chapter under their leadership.
