Chandigarh, March 30 (Bharat Khabarnama Bureau): The Punjab government has appointed senior advocate Maninderjit Singh Bedi as the new Advocate General (AG) of the state, following the resignation of Gurminder Singh, popularly known as Garry. The Home and Justice Department has issued the official notification regarding the appointment on Sunday.
Gurminder Singh Garry, who was appointed as Advocate General in October 2023 after his predecessor Vinod Ghai stepped down due to a controversy with a woman, had reportedly expressed reluctance to continue in the position. Nearly after 18 months in office, Garry conveyed his unwillingness to carry on in a resignation letter, prompting the state government to seek a replacement.
Maninderjit Singh Bedi, an experienced lawyer with a strong track record in constitutional and administrative law, is expected to bring stability to the Punjab Advocate-General’s office, which has seen frequent changes in recent years. Bedi has previously represented the state in significant cases before the Punjab and Haryana High Court and is known for his expertise in legal and policy matters.
The Advocate General’s office plays a crucial role in advising the Punjab government on legal matters, representing the state in court, and handling high-profile cases. With Bedi’s appointment, the government aims to ensure smooth legal operations amid ongoing political and administrative challenges.
Garry’s departure marks another shift in Punjab’s top legal post, raising questions about the office’s stability. However, officials have expressed confidence that Bedi’s experience will help maintain continuity in the state’s legal affairs.
The new Advocate General is expected to assume office immediately and will work closely with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s government on pending and upcoming legal cases.
