Creation of new district may be announced in session
Chandigarh, November 20, 2025 (Bharat Khabarnama Bureau) – The Punjab is preparing for a landmark moment next week as the state steps beyond its traditional precincts to honour the 350th martyrdom day of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur ji with an unprecedented Assembly sitting at Anandpur Sahib. The Punjab governor Gulab Chand Kataria has cleared the way for a special session of the 16th Vidhan Sabha on November 24, turning the Bhai Jaita Ji Memorial into a temporary seat of legislative power.
The cabinet had already backed the plan last Saturday, paving the way for the first Assembly session ever held outside the Chandigarh complex. The government says the gathering will focus entirely on the Guru’s legacy of sacrifice, human rights and social harmony. It will be the centrepiece of a three day state event from November 23 to 25 that celebrates the life and ideals of the ninth Sikh Guru.
Officials have hinted that the session may carry more than symbolic weight. There is growing speculation that the government could use the backdrop of Sri Anandpur Sahib to announce Punjab’s next district. The hill town has long been in contention to become the state’s twenty fourth district and the stage set for November 24 has only fuelled expectations that a formal declaration may be imminent.
