Canada Urges Universities to Diversify Beyond Indian Students – Challenges Ahead for Indian Students

Toronto, February 17, 2025 (Bharat Khabarnama Bureau) – The Canadian government has urged universities and colleges to recruit international students from a broader range of countries rather than relying heavily on India, which remains the largest source of study permit holders.

Canadian Immigration Minister Marc Miller stated during an interaction in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) last week that institutions must expand their outreach beyond just one or two countries. “That doesn’t mean Indian students aren’t among the best and brightest, but we need diversity,” he said. He emphasized that Canadian institutions should invest more in attracting talent globally rather than focusing mainly on India.

Miller also stressed the need to prioritize quality over quantity in Canada’s international student programs.

Challenges Ahead for Indian and Punjabi Students

This shift in policy could make it more difficult for Punjabi and Indian students to secure admission and residency in Canada. The expiration of Post-Graduate Work Permits (PGWP) in 2025 will affect thousands of students, potentially leading to loss of legal status if they fail to transition to permanent residency or other visa categories.

The minister made it clear that there is no guarantee of permanent residency or citizenship for international students, and those without valid status would have to leave the country. “We are not following the U.S. approach under Trump, but those staying irregularly will be removed,” Miller stated.

Uncertain Future for Punjabi Students

With tighter policies, Indian students, particularly Punjabis, may face greater competition, fewer opportunities for settlement, and increased financial challenges in Canada. This shift may push families to explore other global education destinations in the coming years.
