Chandigarh, April 18, 2025 (Bharat Khabarnama Bureau) Controversial Member Parliament and chief of ‘Waris Punjab De’ organisation, Amritpal Singh is set to be lodged in the Punjab jail from Assam’s Dibrugarh Central Jail, where he has been detained under the National Security Act (NSA). A team from Amritsar Rural Police has reached at Dibrugarh to facilitate his transfer.
Mentionably, Amritpal Singh’s NSA detention, which has been extended multiple times since his arrest in 2023, is set to expire on April 23. He will be brought to Punjab on a transit remand in connection with an FIR registered at Ajnala Police Station in Amritsar district. The case pertains to allegations of inciting unrest and unlawful activities.
He was arrested in April 2023 after a massive manhunt and was later shifted to Dibrugarh Jail along with several associates due to security concerns. The Punjab Police have been investigating multiple cases against him, including charges of sedition, promoting enmity, and unlawful assembly.
Nine of his close aides have already been brought back and lodged in Punjab jails for trials in related cases. The Punjab government has been under pressure to expedite legal proceedings against Singh, whose detention under the NSA has faced criticism from human rights groups.
With the NSA detention nearing its end, the Punjab Police are expected to produce Singh before a local court to seek further custody or trial in pending cases. His return to Punjab could reignite political tensions given his influence among certain sections of the Sikh community. Besides, his father has also formed a political party for launching his son for the ensuing Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee elections and general assembly elections in 2027.
