Two more women to be co-opted following Supreme Court mandate
Chandigarh, April 30, 2026 (Bharat Khabarnama Bureau) : The Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana has declared the results of its 2026 elections on Wednesday, returning 23 members after a counting process that stretched over five weeks.
Voting had taken place on March 17 and 18 across Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh. The counting has began on March 20 and was concluded on April 29, according to a statement issued by the returning officer.
Justice (Retired) Jaishree Thakur of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, who served as returning officer, released the final tally. Among the elected members, the top 18 candidates each received an identical vote value of 3,31,721. They are Suvir Sidhu, Karanjit Singh, Ajay Chaudhary, Minderjeet Yadav, Rajender Juneja, Gurtej Singh Grewal, Pardhuman Garg, Pravesh Yadav, Pardeep Parmar, Partap Singh, Amit Rana, Harpreet Singh Multani, Vijender Singh Ahlawat, Karamjeet Singh, Rajat Gautam, Rakesh Gupta, Neeraj Sheoran and Dayal Partap Singh Randhawa.
The remaining five seats were secured by women advocates. Anjali Sehrawat led this group with 2,17,700 votes, followed by Sunita Kalsan with 38,800, Amarjit Kaur with 34,900, Rajni Nanda with 32,000 and Sharmila Sharma with 28,600.
In a communication to the Bar Council of India, Justice (Retired) Ranjit Singh, who chaired the High Powered Election Committee, formally recommended that all 23 candidates be declared as elected members of the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana. He also noted that in accordance with a Supreme Court order dated December 8, 2026, passed in the matter of Yogamaya M.G. versus Union of India and others, two additional women advocates will be co-opted as members of the Council.
