Party sends stern message: “No politics will be tolerated in anti-drug campaign”

Chandigarh June 30, 2025 (Bharat Khabarnama Bureau) In a dramatic move that underscores its zero-tolerance stance on drug-related issues, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday suspended former IPS officer and Amritsar North MLA Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh from the party for five years. The decision was taken by the party’s apex body, the Political Affairs Committee (PAC), citing “anti-party activities.”
The action comes in the wake of Singh publicly questioning the Punjab Vigilance Bureau’s recent action against senior Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia, a key figure under investigation for alleged links to the state’s drug network. AAP deemed his statements as undermining the government’s anti-drug efforts and contrary to the party’s core ideology.
“This is a clear message from the Mann government — any attempt to politicize or obstruct the anti-drug campaign will not be tolerated, even from within the party,” a senior PAC member said.

Dissent from Within
Kunwar Vijay Pratap, a former senior cop and member of the SIT that once probed the 2015 village Bargari sacrilege case, has had a turbulent relationship with political power centers. He was widely seen as sympathetic to the Bargari Morcha agitation, which demanded justice for the sacrilege incidents and was critical of successive state governments, including the present one led by his own party.
His recent remarks expressing skepticism over the Vigilance Bureau’s probe into Majithia were viewed as a breach of party discipline. AAP sources claim this was not his first instance of voicing opinions at odds with the party line.
While Singh has not yet officially responded to his suspension, the decision is likely to stir debate within political and civil society circles, especially among sections that once viewed him as a symbol of clean governance and Panthic accountability.
