Amritsar, May 3, 2025 (Bharat Khabarnama Bureau) : As tensions flare in the aftermath of the deadly terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Punjab police have made a significant counter-espionage breakthrough by arresting two suspected spies allegedly working for Pakistani intelligence services.

The Director General of Punjab Police Gaurav Yadav confirmed today that Palak Sher Masih and Suraj Masih were taken into custody by Amritsar Rural Police for allegedly leaking classified information and images of sensitive Indian Army cantonments and air bases in the border city of Amritsar. The arrests come at a time when India has stepped up surveillance and internal security operations in the wake of cross-border threats.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the duo maintained clandestine communication with handlers across the border. Their alleged connection with Harpreet Singh alias Pittu alias Happy, a known operative currently incarcerated at Amritsar Central Jail, is being probed as a possible conduit for transmission of military intelligence.

SSP Rural Amritsar Maninder Singh informed that the accused have been booked under provisions of the Official Secrets Act, a stringent law used in cases of espionage and threats to national security. Intelligence officials believe the network may be wider and anticipate more arrests in the coming days.

This development comes just days after the Union Government accused Pakistan of sponsoring cross-border terror activities, including the recent Pahalgam attack that left several civilians dead. While Islamabad has denied involvement, Delhi has reiterated that it will not tolerate any attempt to undermine India’s territorial integrity.

In a statement today, the Punjab Police reaffirmed its full cooperation with the Indian Army and national security agencies. “Any attempt to compromise India’s security will be met with swift, decisive action,” an official spokesperson said, emphasizing zero tolerance for espionage in border states.

With India-Pakistan relations at a new low, this espionage incident is likely to add further strain. Diplomatic observers note that border state Punjab, with its strategic military infrastructure, remains a hotspot for intelligence vulnerabilities – a concern heightened amid the current escalation.

India has reportedly enhanced security at military installations across northern regions, while counter-intelligence agencies continue to investigate the depth of the suspected espionage ring.
